Speak Up at 'Coffee with Council '

Starting this Saturday, the Durham City Council will host seven public meetings to hear suggestions on what should be included in the 2008-2009 budget. These 'Coffee with Council' meetings are schedled to occur throughout the city from February 9 to March 13.

This is a golden opportunity to remind Council about our adopted pedestrian, bike and trails plans, and the ongoing need to implement them. There are some elements of these plans that require funding or matching funds from the city.

We all want Durham to be a more walkable and bike friendly place than it currently is. These three plans lay out clear paths, if you will, for achieving this goal. If the Council doesn't hear about the importance of the plans and the projects in them, they won't be funded.

Some items from the plans that require funding are:

Additional Bike/Ped Coordinator-

Bike Plan:

-Implementation funds for Phase I routes (e.g. Washington St, Main St, Chapel Hill St., part of Fayetteville St., & Foster St.)
-Funding for modification/removal of neckdowns on Anderson Street
-Matching funds for planned bike improvements on state roads (e.g. Morreene, West Cornwallis and part of Fayetteville St.)

Pedestrian Plan:
-Improvement of troublesome intersections (e.g Hyde Park at Juniper, LaSalle at Hillsborough, Club at Buchanan)
-Funding or matching funding for 'A' rank sidewalks

Trails Plan:
Design and construction of key trail extensions (e.g West Ellerbee Creek, Pearsontown, Sandy Creek & Third Fork Creek)
