Cyclists Gather for BTWW Events

The after-work Bike to Work event on Thursday at Tylers in the American Tobacco District was attended by more than 30 folks, taking a breather from their commute and enjoying food and comraderie on a beautiful afternoon. The next morning saw a great crowd of 50+ at the Bike to Work Week Breakfast at Mad Hatter's (including Council member Eugene Brown and, briefly, County Commissioner Ellen Reckhow).
Audra Foree and TTA provided excellent publicity for the events as well as great prizes (front and rear bike lights, reflective stickers, and informational brochures). Audra also said that Triangle bicycle commuters pledged to ride more than 10,000 miles this week, surpassing the goal of 1000 miles by a multiple of 10! Chassem Anderson provided DATA info and bike blinky lights. The Durham Bicycle Chain supplied plenty of muscle and know-how, working on close to 20 bikes. Mad Hatter's again proved why they're the breakfast stop of choice, providing some excellent fuel for the morning commute.

National Bike to Work Week is next week, May 14 to 18. Many activities are planned in Durham and across the Triangle to celebrate and encourage commuting by bicycle.

By pledging to ride your bike to work at least one day during Bike to Work Week, you could win a new commuter bicycle from The Bicycle Chain! To pledge, go to gotriangle.org/Bike_Walk/Pledge.html

The Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission is teaming with local businesses to sponsor free afternoon and morning events in Durham:

On Thursday, May 17, there will be a "Cyclists After-Work Get Together" at Tyler's Restaurant in the American Tobacco Historic District from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with free food and prizes for cyclists.

On Friday, May 18, there will be a "Bike to Work Breakfast" at Mad Hatter's Cafe and Bake Shop, 1802 West Main St., from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. with free food, coffee and prizes for cyclists. The Durham Bicycle Chain will also be nearby with a free bike check-up station and prize drawings.

More information about Bike to Work Week in the Triangle is on-line at gotriangle.org. For instance, the website contains bike routes submitted by bike commuters to help new cyclists and those new to the area get ideas for what routes they could try.

Also, on Wednesday, May 16, 7:00 pm there will be a Ride of Silence in Research Triangle Park. The ride begins and ends at the Triangle Life Science Center (the old EPA building) at 86 TW Alexander Dr., Research Triangle Park, NC. The Center is located at the corner or Alexander Drive & Hwy. 54. Go to www.msfits.org for a map and more details.
