Draft Bicycle Plan Available for Review

In January 2006, the City of Durham and Durham County joined efforts to hire local consultants at Greenways Incorporated to begin work on a countywide bicycle plan. The purpose of the Plan has been to consolidate existing regional and local bicycle elements into one cohesive vision for a bicycle-friendly community. The Plan includes a future "bike route network" map and a variety of recommendations for encouragement, enforcement and education programs to help make cycling in Durham safer and more appealing to citizens and visitors.

The draft Durham County Bicycle Plan is now available online for public review and comment. To download the Plan by chapter in PDF format, visit http://www.greenways.com/pages/durham.html. Please send your questions and feedback to Alison Carpenter, the City's Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator, by email at alison.carpenter@durhamnc.gov or by phone at 919-560-4366.

Citizen input will be rolled into a final Plan, which is scheduled for presentation to the Durham City Council and Board of County Commissioners in August and September.
