Bike to Work Day a success

Thanks to the more than 50 people who showed up to Mad Hatter's this morning for Bike to Work Day. Seeing all the bicycles lined up against the iron fence was absolutely beautiful. Hopefully you all left with both your hands and your stomachs full.

National Bike to Work Week, May 15-19

Say goodbye to high-priced gas - at least for a day. Join bicycle commuters across the country on May 15-19, 2006, to observe National Bike to Work Week.

The Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission will team with local businesses to sponsor events planned to encourage Durham commuters to leave their cars at home. The commission will host a "Bike to Work Breakfast" from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on May 19 at Mad Hatter's Cafe and Bake Shop, 1802 West Main St., with free food, coffee and prizes for cyclists. The Durham Bicycle Chain will also be nearby with a free bike check-up station and prize drawings.

The Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) will offer free bus rides throughout the Triangle when you bike to the bus stop May 15 through 19. If you need some tips on how to get around Durham on a bicycle, TTA has a volunteer bicycle mentoring group that can provide advice and information. For information on the mentoring group, visit http://www.gotriangle.org/. For a copy of Durham's "Basic Bike Commuter Guide," visit the MPO website. For information on national Bike to Work Week activities, visit the League of American Bicyclists website.

CityRacks Bike Rack Program

The City of Durham is happy to announce a new grant-funded CityRacks bicycle parking program for the community.

Over a three-year period, the City will be purchasing and installing bicycle lockers and "inverted-U" style bicycle racks at various locations throughout the City. These lockers and racks will be installed on city-owned property, usually on sidewalks or at parks, schools and transit stops or stations. Rack installation along roadways will occur in areas with high demand, and where sidewalks are wide enough to accommodate a bike rack (usually 8ft minimum). Alternatively, the area must be able to accommodate the installation of a concrete pad, where the bicycle rack will sit.

To facilitate rack installation, consider talking to the business owner first to assess whether the bike rack installation is welcome, and then fill out the CityRacks request form online.
