Summers in Durham

Summers in Durham are hot! We've hit 90 degrees already, and it's still June. It's so humid it sometimes feels like you're breathing more water than air.

Be sure to drink lots of fluids and stay cool while biking this summer. If you need a little help remembering what cooler weather feels like, here's a reminder.

Taken here in Durham, just six months ago. Thanks to Durham resident Wessel Kok for submitting this photo.

If you have your own photo of something bicycling, walking, or hiking related that you want to share, submit it via email. Include your name and a caption, if any.

Durham Pedestrian Planning Effort Begins!

The City of Durham is currently working to develop an action plan for the City's future walking trails, sidewalks, and pedestrian-oriented programs. A good plan respects the community's needs and makes the best use of scarce resources. Through February 2006, the City will be working with a Stakeholder Group to recommend improvements to walking facilities and other components of the overall walking environment in Durham.

In addition to these planning efforts, the City will create computer mapping of every public sidewalk and hard surface trail in the city limits. This important effort includes taking pictures at selected intersections to ensure successful maintenance and accessibility for Durham's mobility-impaired citizens. The mapping and photography will require crews of surveyors using cameras and Geographic Positioning System equipment to perform field work throughout the City, in order to accurately map the location of sidewalks and trails on the ground. Look for these workers outside on sidewalks or trails near your home or business in the coming months. The more time that our surveyors spend answering questions the less time that they have to do their work, so citizens are encouraged to use one of the following means for gathering more project information.

More Information: If you are interested in our planning process, please don't hesitate to help. We have made our plan open to the public in a number of ways:

- Attend a public meeting in one of the five PAC districts; the first series of meetings will be in mid-July. Call 467-9081 for more information.

- Visit the DurhamWalks! website at http://www.durhamwalks.org/

- Work with local schools to highlight special issues for students that walk to and around school campuses.

- Use the dedicated project telephone line for comments and questions - just call 467-9081 and someone will return your call generally within one workday.

- Contact Durham's Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for more info:
